by Ellis Peters
Another satisfying medieval mystery featuring Brother Cadfael. This time an aging couple move into one of the abbey's guesthouses to live out their retirement in return for gifting their manor to the abbey. However, shortly after their arrival, the husband is murdered, and there is an abundance of people with motive and opportunity to kill him. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the widow, Richildis, is Cadfael's fiancee from decades past, and the chief murder suspect is her son from her first marriage. All of this also plays out against the backdrop of the abbey's own internal politics.
The Cadfael mysteries continue to be a delight. Peters packs so much into them, and there's always more going on than just the mystery. Cafael himself is a wonderful character and I love seeing how he works out the solutions - not just to the murders themselves, but also to the human dramas that surround the murders.
