by Rachel Aaron
This is the fourth book in Aaron's Eli Monpress fantasy series, which concerns the exploits of Eli, the world's greatest thief and a powerful wizard. at the end of the initial trilogy, Aaron had begun to reveal more about the nature of the world and what is really going on in it. The Spirit War continues this trend while telling a great story about how Eli, Josef, and Nico get involved in repulsing the invading Immortal Empress and her overwhelmingly powerful and numerous forces.
The Spirit War is a fast-paced story with a good mix of intrigue and action. While there are no real surprises, it moves along well and gives the reader some interesting new perspectives on familiar characters as well as some new faces. I especially liked the focus on Josef, who, it turns out, is actually the prodigal prince of a small, yet strategically located, island nation. I liked the way his character unfolds in this book, and I loved seeing more of his magical sword, the Heart of War, in action. There's at least one more book in the series, and I am very much looking forward to it.
