by Agatha Christie
This is the first of the Miss Marple mysteries, in which an unpopular upper-crust denizen of a small English village is shot in the vicar's study. Miss Marple is one of the vicar's neighbors and her sharp powers of observation combined with excellent reasoning and a good understanding of human nature allow her to put together the clues and evidence properly and solve the mystery.
Christie's writing is pretty workman-like, but that works quite well for the genre. The narrative is well paced, nipping along smartly. Characterization is not very deep, but completely sufficient to get the job done. I admit that I didn't work to hard at solving the mystery myself - I just wanted to enjoy the ride - so the resolution was a satisfying surprise. All in all, Murder at the Vicarage was a pleasant and quick read.
