by Michael Northrop
This YA novel is set in the northwestern corner of CT, and tells the story of seven teenagers who are stranded in their high school during a disaster-level blizzard (over ten feet of snow in two days), as narrated by Scotty, one of the seven. It was a pretty quick read for me, and there was a lot to like. Northrop does a good job of building tension and a sense of dread, and the characters and their actions are very realistic. The mix of character types and the group dynamics were slightly reminiscent of The Breakfast Club. The protagonists all have the right mix of being smart and stupid, making some very astute choices and some rather foolish ones. And thankfully, no one is Too Dumb to Live. Trapped also is enjoyably gritty and serious about the situation. This is not some smarmily edifying after school special about kids overcoming adversity, this is about a group of teenagers trying to survive a dangerous and increasingly desperate situation with genuinely high stakes. I also really liked the ambiguity of the ending.
