Book Review
Dec. 8th, 2011 11:01 amMusic Research: A Handbook
by Laurie J. Sampsel
This book was the textbook for my Music Bibliography class. Each chapter discusses a particular type of source (thematic catalogs, research guides, etc.) used in musicological research, providing annotated and categorized bibliographies. Sampsel also notes which items are the most complete and authoritative in each category, and provides citations for reviews of the sources. Music Research is both readable as a book and well-organized for use as a reference. Some of the screen shots for databases and online catalogs were somewhat out of date, but that is a minor flaw, and certainly one that may be unavoidable when dealing with web based sources. Overall, I found the book a good introduction and guide to music sources and how to use them. While not the most exciting reading, it is a very useful and practical book.
