This YA novel was weird and fascinating. Consuela collapses in a mall dressing room and soon after finds herself in a parallel world called the Flow, a malleable place of shifting reality . Here, she can shed her skin and exist as a pearlescent skeleton with the ability to make new skins of various elements and substances. Each skin gives her different powers and senses.
Luminous is fast-paced, exciting, and filled with vivid detail. I really liked Consuela – she had a realistic mix of confidence and uncertainty, especially when dealing with the Flow and its other denizens. There’s a lot going on in the book, but it never felt overstuffed or disjointed, and the exploration of the world fit together seamlessly with the working out of the plot. It also left me with a delicious sense of wanting to know more about the Flow and the characters.
