Book Review
Jan. 31st, 2011 10:15 pmNative American Music in Eastern North America
by Beverley Diamond
This book ended up being a slight disappointment, because I found it pretty superficial when it came to discussion of the music itself. I wanted more explanation and analysis of the features of the music and how it works. I was particularly disappointed when it came to the Inuit throat-singing, as I found this music utterly fascinating. On the other hand, this book was excellent at placing various Native American musical practices and genres in the context of their practitioners' culture and traditions. However, Diamond's prose style seemed to keep the reader at a distance, which I found a hindrance to really appreciating the music.
