Firefly Rain
by Richard Dansky

Horror is not a genre I'm usually all that much into, but I really enjoyed this book. One of the main factors of my enjoyment is that this was a supernatural/haunted house kind of horror story, which is the kind I prefer. It is about Jacob Logan, who returns to his rural North Carolina hometown and the house he grew up in to gather himself together after a failed business venture in Boston. However, instead of a peaceful regrouping in comforting familiarity, Jacob finds himself in the midst of strange and menacing occurrences and amongst wary and sometimes hostile townsfolk. The supernatural aspects are given a nice balance between being clear from the outset and being gradually revealed. While there were plenty of times that I thought Jacob was being something of a jerk, I did like him as a protagonist: he was interesting and I liked the way he reacted to the supernatural goings on.
I do have to say that I'm not sure how I felt about the ending. But this may have more to do with me than with the book. There's a certain aspect of Firefly Rain that hit a quite close to home for me, and I'm sure that's part of my reaction to the ending.
