by Timothy Rice
This is the last of the ethnomusicology books on my stack. I really enjoyed this one, because Eastern European music has always been interesting to me. This one kept to the simpler side of musical analysis while still exploring the structure and features of the music. Rice also looked at the musical repercussions of social change that occurred in Bulgaria over the course of the 20th century, often revealing his nostalgia for pre-WWII rural village life. Unlike the other books I read in this series, Music In Bulgaria also sheds light on the methods and concerns of ethnomusicologists.
