On August 14, Other Kenjari and I went to the DeCordova museum in Lincoln. The current exhibit is on weird and gothic America and contains contemporary art that deals with motifs, stories, and legends from American history and culture. Most of it was interesting, but very little of it really excited me or stuck with me.
The best part of the DeCordova is the huge sculpture park. There are so many fascinating pieces, and some incredibly beautiful ones, too. There was a Paul Matisse piece called The Musical Fence, a beam with aluminum sounding bars of different lengths sticking out of it. You could play it with sticks, making a lovely series of tones by walking up and down it, or just playing individual bars in different sequences. If it hadn't been so hot out, I could have spent a lot more time with it. I also really liked Chakaia Booker's abstract pieces made out of wood and tires; Ursula von Rydingsvard's ence pence, which reminded me of some sort of ruin or architectural remains; and Daniel Ladd's Bannister Trees, which is made out of living elms. We also saw the amusing sight of a new tall sculpture that had only recently been installed, fenced off by caution tape, and accompanied by a sprinkler watering the replanted grass around it. It gave the impression that the sculpture was being grown.
After getting our fill of sculpture, we left the DeCordova for Walden Pond, which turned out to be a perfect idea due to the heat and sun. We had a very relaxing time there and then returned home for dinner and more lounging about.
On Saturday, I went out to my sister and D's barbeque and movie night, which was held at his parents' house, because they were out of town. The irony of going to one of those kind of parties for the first time in my mid-thirties was not lost on me. We had plenty of delicious food, my sister introduced me to the cocktail perfection that is a Pimm's, and we spent some blissful time in the hot tub, and watched Tron. I had never seen the film straight through in its entirety, and while it's not a particularly good movie, it is visually innovative and very much ahead of its time.
Other Kenjari and I did absolutely nothing on Sunday, which was a perfect way to finish our vacation.
