I just got back from the Opening Night welcome reception, a beginning-of-semester event for Berklee faculty and staff. It was held at the Westin Copley hotel - there was a buffet, drinks, and a live salsa band. The band was really good, too, which should come as no surprise.
The surprise was that I had a lot of fun at a work function. Genuine fun, not office party fun. There was dancing - Berklee had even hired an instructor to teach us salsa steps. And not only did I spend a lot of time on the dance floor, but so did many other people - nobody had to be dragged up there. Even the president of the college was dancing. Berklee folks really know how to party! I talked to lots of people, too, so I'm getting to know my colleagues better. And my composition teacher from Boston Conservatory now teaches at Berklee, so I got to talk to him as well.
After the band wrapped up, I was outside the ballroom chatting, and the group in the adjoining room came out for a break. They looked quite corporate, and were not as happy and smiley as we were. I wonder if they realized that we were having a work function and not a private party. I wonder if they wished that they could have come and joined us.
Tomorrow we're having Opening Day, which includes breakfast, some speeches, Gunther Schuller, and a cookout. So, um, more fun. I *love* this job.
