Young performances
Jun. 7th, 2008 08:02 pmOn Thursday night, I went to a middle school concert for the first time since I myself was in middle school. I had written a violin and cello duet for
davidsmom1 and
tkstargazer's son to play with a friend. The performance was on the rough side, but had some lovely moments nonetheless. The music teacher did say that she is going to continue to work on the piece with the kids, and perform it again in the future. I am so lucky - it is surprisingly uncommon for composers to get repeat performances of new pieces.
Also, I was quite impressed with the string program at this school. The teacher, C, is doing some really great work there. She's even got the beginners doing interesting stuff with real meat to it. It's certainly a more extensive and robust string program than my middle school had. It was clear that the kids really loved and respected C, too. The kidlet is quite fortunate to have this, and I'm really glad he's taking advantage of it. It's a wonderful thing to be able to experience music not just as something you listen to, but as something you also do.
I may end up doing some more work with the school, too. C and I talked very briefly about the possibility of my coming down and giving a talk about being a composer, and maybe writing for some other students. I'm pretty excited about that.
