Cousin Bette
by Honore de Balzac

Another fine work by Balzac. He's very cynical about human nature and society, but his books are so engrossing. This one chronicles the attempts of the spinster Bette to take revenge on the Hulots, wealthy relations who she believes have alternately neglected her and taken her for granted. To exact vengeance, Bette schemes with Madame Marneffe, a greedy and unscrupulous courtesan, to wreak financial and emotional ruin on the Hulots, both individually and collectively. In the process of telling his tale, Balzac blows the cover of 19th century respectability.
