It's fairly violent and has some rather strikingly bloody scenes, but, like in Cronenberg's previous movie A History of Violence, I found the violence to be tightly controlled and not overly glamorized. Viggo Mortensen is very good as a quiet, mysterious Russian mobster. There's one plot twist that I wish had gotten more attention, but overall, I liked the way Eastern Promises deftly kept some questions unanswered.
