Things are still going well, if a little hectic. The schedule is rather packed and it can be a bit grueling. The intensity of the experience is ultimately a good thing, though.
I gave my presentation on Sunday morning and it went quite well. I played my trio The Floating Land, and the first of the Three Songs that I wrote for <lj user="pantsie">. The trio got a particularly good response, and I feel that the other participants liked my music overall. Scott Ordway, who is playing my piano works on the concert, said that what I presented was totally different from the piano pieces, so I'm going to be really interested to hear what people think of those.
The gamelan sessions are going well. I'm starting to write my piece, and I think it will be good. Because of the limited time and the fact that our group is pretty much beginners, I'm going with a simple structure and straightforward material.
We've seen two more concerts, too. PDQ Bach was a lot of fun. The concert was actually half PDQ Bach and half Peter Schickele works. One of the things I love about PDQ Bach concerts is that not only is the music itself funny, but there's also a lot of humor about the rituals and conventions of classical music performance. Schickele chose lighter more humorous works, which I think was perfect. After the hilarity of the PDQ Bach stuff, it would have been impossible to get the audience into a serious mode.
On Sunday I went to an afternoon concert of Bach chamber concerti and Mozart. It was great. The orchestra here has a wonderful sound, very clear and precise. The soloists were terrific. It was also nice to get some contrast with all the contemporary music I've been hearing.
The piano portion of the symposium is starting up tomorrow, and I'm pretty excited about that.
