Last night, [livejournal.com profile] epilimnion and I went to the Boston Modern Orchestra concert, which was a program of French music.

Jour B - Betsy Jolas
This piece didn't really do it for me. There were some nice moments, but overall it seemed jumbled. There were many points at which it seemed about to coalesce but never made it.

Galim - Pascal Dusapin
This piece for orchestra and flute was the best on the program. The flute writing was terrific: great contrast and balance between lyrical sections and faster more aggressive material, gorgeous use of pitch-bending effects. The orchestral writing was both subtle and lush. The piece had a graceful and satisfying arc of development, too. The flutist, Alicia DiDonato, was amazing - agile and expressive.

Coda - Pascal Dusapin
This piece for 13 instruments wasn't quite as good as Galim, but it was still enjoyable. It was more modernistic than the previous piece, but didn't suffer from the lack of rhythmic drive that I find in so much modernist music. There was a particularly good part in the middle of the piece which almost got a groove going but noit quite, in a way that was delicious rather than disappointing.

Le Sette Chiese - Bruno Mantovani
This seven movement work was monumental and really interesting. One of the movements had some exciting and wonderful percussion material, which was the highlight of the work for me. The rest of it was fascinating, but I unfortunately became rather tired during the piece (not because of the music, though), and couldn't give it quite the attention it really deserved.

Last week, I went to the NEC Jordan Winds concert because Dr. Bell had a premiere on the program.

Fanfares Liturgiques - Henri Tomasi
This piece for large brass ensemble really suprised me. The brass writing was so inventive and accomplished. It was almost organ-like at times.

Dark Orange Concerto - Larry Bell
I really liked this piece, especially the last movement. I'm not always good about discussing my own teacher's work, so I'll leave it at that.

Sept Danses - Jean Francaix
This was light, airy, and very French.

Sinfonietta - Ingolf Dahl
To be honest, I don't remember very much about this one. It was neither amazing nor horrible.
