5 famous people I've met meme
Dec. 6th, 2006 10:24 pmOK, so some of these people are only famous in certain circles...
1. Steve Reich
I met him when I was at Wesleyan. He was at the school because his son was visiting as a prospective student. Alvin Lucier introduced me to Mr. Reich right outside the music building (how's that for a music nerd moment?). It was extra exciting for me, because I was in the process of working on my senior thesis, in which I was writing about "Different Trains". I'd also been presenting about the piece in Alvin Lucier's class. Steve Reich was pretty personable as I recall.
2 & 3 Delia Sherman and Ellen Kushner
I met both of them at a party at the Junction. I was actually pretty fan-girly, too. I was standing in the kitchen, talking to
obra, and this woman joined the conversation. When I realized, from some clues in the conversation, who she was, I blurted out, "You're Delia Sherman? I just read The Porcelain Dove" (I had finished it just a week or so before the party). She was totally friendly, and when I said I was a composer, she then introduced me to Ellen Kushner, and we all had a nice talk about gamelan music and Lou Harrison.
4. Ed Harris
This happened recently.
5. John Harbison
He came over to Boston Conservatory when I was there, to give a lunch-time lecture about Roger Sessions and Aaron Copland. He got there early, while I was still having my composition lesson with Dr. Bell. Since John Harbison knows Dr. Bell, he came into the office and the last ten or so minutes of my lesson turned into conversation with John Harbison. The lecture was great, too.
I've also briefly met a whole bunch of composers and performers at post-concert receptions. Some of them relatively famous, some fairly unknown.
