Weekend update
Aug. 29th, 2005 11:39 pmI had a nice, relaxing weekend. I had nothing scheduled, so I could take each day as it came.
On Friday night, Other Kenjari and I went to dinner, and then to see The Brothers Grimm. I enjoyed it, despite its flaws. Like all Terry Gilliam movies I have seen, it had some very good things and some pretty bad things. I felt that the whole French military angle didn't add very much to the movie, and was only minimally redeemed by Jonathan Pryce. I found it to be too much of a distraction from the things I was really interested in. I also thought Gilliam could have done a bit more with the brothers' relationship and history. However, the look and atmosphere of the film was terrific, and I had a lot of fun spotting all the fairy tale references. All Terry Gilliam's movies seem to be about the same thing: how the stories we tell ourselves and others are as important in shaping our lives and selves as the realities we experience. The Brother Grimm had the potential to explore this theme in a really wonderful way, but didn't quite live up to it.
On Sunday we took a nice long walk starting at the Riverway and winding back home via Brookline Village. Along the Riverway, there is a round arch bridge made out of stone. If you stand under it at about the midpoint of its width, you can get a wonderful echo, kind of a slap-back thing. I stood under there for a couple minutes clapping my hands and speaking loudly. Brookline Village has a lot of nice shops and restaurants. We will have to go back there when we have more time and energy for poking about.
The rest of the weekend was spent playing piano, composing, and cooking.
