I love Jim Jarmusch
Aug. 7th, 2005 10:23 pmLast night Other Kenjari and I went out to see Broken Flowers, the new Jim Jarmusch film, with
epilimnion and D. It was wonderful, and I encourage everyone to go see it. It stars Bill Murray as a guy who gets a mysterious unsigned letter purporting to be from one of his exes, informing him that he has a grown son. In response to this, he goes on a trip to visit each one of the possible mothers to see if he can figure it all out. It's more about the journey than any destination or resolution, though. That's true of a lot of Jarmusch's films, come to think of it. Broken Flowers is, true to Jarmusch's style, rather slow-paced and almost meditative (it was actually kind of fast-paced compared to some of his other films, but that's still pretty slow compared to more typical movie pacing). He likes to linger on images and in moments in ways that are quite lovely. Jarmusch also does a really good job of mingling the comic with the poignant, and Bill Murray is the ideal actor for such juxtapositions. I especially liked how each encounter with an ex-lover had its own unique flavor of awkwardness.
