I had a very relaxing, fun weekend. On Saturday, Other Kenjari and I went down to CT for Zackfest, which was a great time. The weather was absolutely perfect, and I got to see lots of folks I hadn't seen in a while and meet some new folks, too. It was especially fun to see Sam and Joanne, because I had not done so in a very long time. I also got to meet their 16-month-old son, who is a very sweet little boy.
We also managed to get Zack to loan us his set of Firefly DVDs. When the show was actually on the air, I was writing my master's thesis, organizing my graduate recital, and planning my wedding. I had no time for TV, no matter how excellent the show. And I'm not really all that much interested in TV, so I was content to let the show pass me by. But having recently seen the trailer for Serenity, I decided that Firefly was worth catching up on. We got back to Boston much earlier than expected, so we watched the first three episodes. I really enjoyed them. It's a much more character-driven than plot-driven show. The story lines of the episodes, while certainly not completely cliched, were treading fairly familiar ground. But the characters and their world are quite interesting, such that I was drawn in more by how the characters dealt with the situations than by the situations themselves. I really want to find out more about these people, regardless of what they are actually doing - I would watch them all doing their laundry if it made for good interactions. A few things also became abundantly clear to me: Joss Whedon likes Westerns, he's read Ender's Game, and he admires the Alien movies.
