Anniversary, part 1
Jun. 12th, 2005 12:10 pmThe only drawback to going to the Oregon Bach Festival is that it takes place at the end of June. Thus, I will be all the way across the continent from Other Kenjari on our second wedding anniversary. So we had to pick an alternate day on which to celebrate. Then we decided that since it was, after all, our second wedding anniversary, we were entitled to celebrate twice! So, anniversary observed, part 1, was yesterday. Dinner, a stroll through downtown, an impromptu splurge on CDs and DVDs, and then a movie.
Dinner was at Jacob Wirth in the theater district. Yummy German food, and a very satisfying strawberry shortcake for dessert. Then we walked through the Common, Public Gardens, and then down Newbury Street. Alas, we missed all of the festivities, booths, etc. out on the Common, but the roses in the Public Garden were beautiful. At the end of Newbury street, we decided to duck into Virgin to browse and partake of the air conditioning. We did a little more than browse - the classical section is such a dangerous place.
We rounded out the evening by going to see "Howl's Moving Castle" at the Coolidge Corner theater, where we could see the subtitled version. It's not quite as good as "Spirited Away" or "Princess Mononoke", but it's still better than a lot of other stuff out there. The visuals are breathtaking - Miyazaki still does flight better than anyone, and the landscapes are just gorgeous. I also really liked Sophie - she never loses her backbone, never mopes or gives over to despair. It's just that the plot has a few glaring holes - certain things just don't quite fit together. Nonetheless, I would still recommend the movie. I have yet to see anything produced by Studio Ghibli that was a waste of my time.
