Star Wars

Other Kenjari and I went to see Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith this morning. It was okay. I agree with many of the people on my friends list that the scenes between Anakin and Padme were atrocious. The dialog was horrible, and Hayden Christiansen isn't much of an actor to begin with.
And Anakin may be an incredibly talented Jedi when it comes to light-saber fighting, flashy starship piloting, and throwing the Force around, but he's really lacking in the perception and subtlety department. There were several points during his interactions with Palpatine at which I was wondering why Anakin didn't get even a little suspicious. Palpatine plays the boy like a violin, and Anakin is completely oblivious to it. No wonder Darth Vader can't turn Luke to the dark side in the later episodes - he can't even recognize manipulation when it's right in front of his face, never mind actually engage in it.
Nonetheless, Revenge of the Sith does deliver in the action department. The light-saber battles are terrific, particularly the climactic battle. And the opening "space ballet" scene is the best one I've seen in any Star Wars movie. The sets and costumes are everything we've come to expect from Star Wars: a gorgeous combination of the futuristic, archaic, and exotic. There's lots of great eye-candy. And I was thrilled to see the wookie home-planet. So cool.
Now if only there had been even more Obi-Wan. Ewan McGregor gives the best performance in the movie. He makes Obi-Wan the most fully-realized character, and the one to whom I related the most.

It's Done!

In other news, I finished "I Want to Pull On Your Coat About Something", my piece for the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, this week. Last night, as a matter of fact. It goes to Copy Cop tomorrow for printing and binding, and then to the post office on Tuesday. It should arrive in the hands of Dr. Kyr and the Fireworks ensemble on Wednesday.
I think the piece came out really well. I like a lot of what I did, and that it was quite a stretch in several ways. And there's the feeling of accomplishment from writing it in so short a time. I just hope the people at the symposium are impressed, too.
Now to spend the rest of the week on reading and quality time with Other Kenjari.
