Other Kenjari and I got back from Christmas with my family last night. Despite the snowstorm, Amtrak was actually running on time between New London and Boston, so we didn't have any trouble traveling. The T is running just fine, too, so I even made it to work on time today.
Christmas was good - we're usually pretty quiet and laid back in my family. No big crowds or raucous gatherings. Just good food and presents. We got lots of nice things, including a totally unexpected XBox from
epilimnion and her guy D. Neither of us Kenjaris are huge video-game players, I admit, but I'm sure we'll have fun with it. And it really is one of the most generous, affection-laden presents we've ever received. Epilimnion and D got us two LOTR games to go with it, too. My sister got me a copy of Ermengard of Narbonne and the World of the Troubadours, by Fred Cheyette. Signed by the author, too, since D's family knows him. And of course, Other Kenjari showered me with gifts, including a four-CD set of the complete piano works of Debussy. The presents we gave were received well. I got Connie Willis' Doomsday Book for my mother. I hope she enjoys it - I think it may well be the first fantasy/sci-fi book she will have read. We got my dad a gorgeous Scottish dirk for his knife and dagger collection. He's started hanging his knives up on the ceiling beams in the basement - it's beginning to remind me of an armoury down there.
It seems that Scrabble is the game to play on the holidays, at least among my friends list. And we were no exception. I beat Mom, epilimnion, and D, mostly thanks to the word "equality", with which I not only was able to play a 10-point q, but also used all seven of my tiles in one turn, earning me a huge bonus score.
I hope everyone had a good holiday, too.
