The Woman in White
by Wilkie Collins

Written in the 1860s, The Woman in White is one of the first "sensation" novels. It's a lot like a modern thriller in many ways, and very enjoyable to read. Collins' skill with the genre very much stands the test of time, so that I found the suspense and mystery very effective despite my familiarity with the conventions of the thriller. Seeing those conventions play out in the cultural and social milieu of the Victorian era was also fascinating. Class and social status play a much more prominent role in the story than in more recent examples of the genre.
