This lengthy novel covers the whole of Elizabeth I's life. Kay does a very solid job and has some interesting views and theories about the more shadowy aspects of Elizabeth's life. I was particularly impressed with the portrayal of the queen's life-long relationship with Robin Dudley - it rang true. Kay also successfully gives a rather hard-edged view of Elizabeth without losing an essential sympathy with and admiration for her.
