Book Review

The Sun Over Breda
by Arturo Perez-Reverte

This is the third book in the Captain Alatriste series and is quite a departure from the preceding two volumes. The action takes place in Flanders rather than Spain, as Alatriste has returned to the Spanish army and is fighting against the Dutch in the campaign leading up to the siege of Breda. There is no swashbuckling and very little intrigue, but it is still a great read. Alatriste and his compatriots remain great characters, and the gritty portrayal of 17th century warfare is very compelling.

Being a fan of Club Dumas, I picked up Captain Alatriste earlier this year, and it's up next on my reading list. I had no idea there were sequels, cool!

It's a six book series. Only the first three are out in translation, though. The others are forthcoming.

Ditto -- I've read a lot of his stuff and it sounds like I need to check these out.
