This evening I submitted an article to the Journal of Musicology. It's about Alfred Schnittke, the late Russian composer (check out his second string quartet, it's amazing). I'd written it at the beginning of grad school for a class, and, in addition to giving me a good grade, the professor recommended trying to get it published. At the time, I didn't get around to it because I was too busy with composing, classes, etc. Plus, although I did recognize it as a good paper, I wasn't really sure it was good enough for academic publications (despite what the professor said - I thought maybe he was just being a bit excessive in his praise).
But I've recently changed my mind about the publishing thing. First of all, I need to boost my portfolio for next year's round of applications. Second, I've now read more journal articles and realize that I may have had a slightly inflated vision of journal articles. My paper doesn't compare badly to a lot of what I've read. So I went ahead with the process. Let's see what happens.
Oh, and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ladybird97 for the advice and encouragement!

Thanks! I'm really glad that I could help you out - I'm not entirely sure of my way around this whole academic-publishing thing yet either, but I guess we'll help each other through this, and someday see both our names in lights! Or print. Or whatever :)

Good luck! Please keep us posted on what happens!
