This weekend Other Kenjari and I went down to CT for the first NPC meeting for the fall weekend Quest game, Truth of a Legend. It was a good, fun meeting. Now I know what's actually going to go on at the game - it's going to be terrific. I strongly encourage everyone to come.
We got home pretty early, so we decided to go see X-3. I'm rather in agreement with most of the reviews I've seen on LiveJournal and elsewhere.

Ian McKellen is really good, even when his dialogue isn't as good as he is. I want to go out and rent just about everything he's ever been in.
John Powell's score was very effective, if a little overblown at times. There were plenty of scenes where the music really enhanced what was going on onscreen: The confrontation between Jean Grey and Charles Xavier in Jean's childhood home was particularly well-scored. And the orchestration team did a good job throughout.
I liked the hints given at the end of the movie, both about Magneto (which also has serious implications for Rogue and Mystique) and about Xavier. They were surprising and clever.
I like watching Hugh Jackman, I just do.

Brett Ratner is just not as good a director as Bryan Singer.
Dark Phoenix is a good story and so is the Mutant Cure. But they're not good when mushed together like that. Both stories get short shrift, neither are done as well as they could be, although Dark Phoenix suffers the most.
With the plot being so overstuffed, several opportunities for really interesting moments were completely ignored, for example: I really wanted Pyro to have a moment of pause and consideration regarding Magneto and his motives just before they enter the fray in the final battle sequence, either regarding Magneto's callousness or, conversely, regarding his continued high regard for Xavier.
In general, I think that the emotional side of things was not given enough attention. I like action as much as anybody, but I think that it was a shame to not have more development of the relationships between the various characters.
Some of the character deaths lacked real resonance. I also feel some disappointment about so many of the new mutants being summarily killed off at the end. Now we'll never get to learn more about them.

I agree; if I had to make just one complaint about the movie, it would be its insufficient characterization.

I am terribly looking forward to the fall weekend game; a few of us are already putting together our party, and starting to sort out the details of our characters' personalities.

We're working on getting a full PC packet out very soon. And I think there are some plans to start a Yahoo group for PCs to get information and chat with the game staff and each other.
