It turns out that through a combination of cleverness and luck, Other Kenjari and I will not have to move after all. We never let in any agents to show the apartment, so it was still available after we got the decision from Oregon. And Samia was perfectly willing to let us keep it and sign another lease. I'm very relieved - I don't need the stress and hassle of moving unless some grad school is involved. We might rearrange the furniture, though, to see if we can squeeze some more space out of the apartment.

In preparation for the next round of grad school applications, I am going to try to have three new works written by the end of the summer. Then in the fall I can concentrate on getting at least one, hopefully two of them recorded. I'm also going to investigate some new schools to apply to. First up is Duke. I met a couple of people who were getting graduate degrees there last summer at the Oregon Bach Festival: nice guys who were writing really interesting music. Plus, Durham doesn't sound half bad and the rents are very affordable. I'm thinking that if I go visit Duke in the fall, Other Kenjari and I will go together and then make a little vacation of it. A couple days visiting the school and then some hiking and stuff. And visiting with [livejournal.com profile] ashears, perhaps?

I've also .
Other Kenjari convinced me to watch "Apocalypse Now". I have to admit that I wasn't that impressed. It's got some great moments, but I wasn't exactly blown away. I read Heart of Darkness in high school, and hated it. "Apocalypse Now" substantially improves the source material - setting it during Vietnam ensures that stuff actually happens. And the nature of the military mission makes it so that the viewer gets at least some information about Kurtz. Nonetheless, it still didn't work for me.

We also rented "Memoirs of a Geisha". I'd read the book and liked it. The movie is very pretty, but I think it's a little empty. It doesn't get very far beyond the surface of things. John Williams did a good job with the score, though.

Yay! A visit would be awesome. Let me know as plans develop. So far, I intend to be away for the first week of October, and that's all that's on the calendar. There's a possible trip to either the fall game or SPX for Oct 13/14, but it's most likely that I'll do neither.

Durham has proved to be pretty cool with me, and Raleigh & Chapel Hill have much to offer, too. I have many many geek friends I could introduce you to if you ended up moving here.

Plus, there's rdansky and julianyap around, _t_ will have moved by then, though.

Other Kenjari and I are NPCs for the fall game, so it won't be that weekend. It might be the week after, though. A lot will depend on the school's and professors' schedules. I'll keep you posted.
