I finally got around to calling the piano tuner, because my piano had not only gone out of tune, but had also developed some very annoying key noise.
The tuner came today and ended up spending over two hours with my piano (a routine tuning takes around an hour). Although having to listen to 2+ hours of piano tuning is not exactly pleasant, I am incredibly glad that my tuner is the type to stay as long as it takes to make sure that the piano is completely right. Alas, my piano will not be completely right until January, since it is broken, but only a little. A small part in the damper pedal mechanism is broken, as well as a small plastic part elsewhere. The tuner is ordering new parts. Luckily, I can still play in the meantime. The damper pedal still functions, it is just noisy, and the tuner was able to glue the plastic bit back together so it will hold until the new one arrives.
My piano is nearly twenty years old, and I play it almost every day. Plus, I've moved it twice now. And the vagaries of the New England climate probably cause a slight amount of additional stress on it. The instrument has had its share of key noise, pedal squeaks, and sticky keys, but this is the first time any part of the mechanism has actually broken. It's a good piano, though, and I expect to have it with me for the rest of my life. (I plan on purchasing a baby grand at some point, but I intend to keep this piano, too. Because two pianos are better than one.)

It's good to have your piano sorted. I've got a Clavinova. What do you think of digital pianos? It's ideal for me as we have a very small bungalow with one main living room. So when I want to play and my husband wants the TV we can both put on headphones!! I can do the same whan I want to compose at the computer. Here's hoping you have many happy years playing your piano.

You, my dear, are dedicated. I look forward to having a piano and a place to put it. We might get an electronic one for a while first, but we're getting one when we can. And of course all of this presumes we will first actually get to live together, which we're looking forward to....

I have very little experience playing digital pianos, but with today's technology, I bet they can sound very good. I personally prefer a regular acoustic piano, but I'm also not against digital pianos. There's room for both in the musical world.

I love my piano - I've had it since I was 12. It's not exactly an inanimate object to me, and it's way more than just a possession.
Of course, I'm hardly objective in this matter, but yes, you should absolutely get a piano. You can probably get a decent used one at a reasonable price - sometimes people who are moving don't want to take their pianos with them, and will sell them fairly cheaply to anyone who can haul the instrument away (and short-range piano moving fees are quite reasonable).

I wish our neighbors would get their piano tuned. I really don't mind her practicing the Mendelsohn's wedding march at 11 pm, or Go Tell It on the Mountain at midnight. But not when the piano is out of tune.
