Book Review

Hello Stranger
by Lisa Kleypas

This historical romance is, refreshingly, about people outside of the upper crust. Garrett Gibson is the only woman doctor in Britain. She works at a clinic attached to Winterbourne's department store, and provides free medical services to the poor of Clerkenwell. Ethan Ransom is a former police detective involved in a covert government agency. After their initial meeting, Ethan finds himself powerfully attracted to Garrett not just for her beauty but for her intelligence and competence. As they keep encountering one another, their attraction blooms into something more. When Ethan is shot, Garrett performs a risky surgery to save his life and then nurses him back to health, cementing their love.
I enjoyed this book a lot. Garrett is such a compelling heroine. She's very intelligent and competent, as well as practical and confident. She knows what she wants and unapologetically goes after it. Ethan has a very tough exterior but a core of warmth and tenderness. His devotion to and support of Garrett is lovely. The elements of intrigue worked well with the romance. I tend to really like the loving care through an injury or illness plot point fairly, and Kleypas does it very well.
