The Amber Spyglass
by Philip Pullman
This is the final volume of His Dark Materials, and Pullman pulls it all together nicely. While there is nothing very surprising or earth-shaking about the philosophical ideas he explores and nature of his world and its contents (especially Dust), it's all very well done and elegantly built. The fates of the various characters are all emotionally satisfying. I particularly enjoyed the character development of Lyra and Will. They grow up gradually and subtly, as a result of the accumulation of their experiences.
