Book Review

The Devil's Novice
by Ellis Peters

This is the eighth Cadfael novel, and while it does stick to most of the patterns, it has some nice twists and turns. A new novice, Merit Aspley, arrives at Cadfael's abbey in the late fall. Aloof and prone to nightmares, Meriet is shunned by the other novices but attracts the attention of Cadfael. When the body of a young priest and court official last seen at Aspley turns up, Meriet is the chief suspect. However, one mystery spins out into two and things get more complicated. I particularly enjoyed this novel because of the development of two entwined mysteries, and because I found the characters and their relationships quite compelling.
